Nasa Jet Propulsion Lab Data Center

Nasa Jet Propulsion Lab Data Center, Pasadena CA

Project Description:

TMCx Solutions, LLC has provided commissioning services directly to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for over 5 years.  Building B230 contains a data center supporting the Mars Rover project and has been expanded through 3 phases.  Each phase has been commissioned by TMCx.

Scope of Work:

TMCx provided commissioning services for the design and construction phases.  During the design phase, we worked closely with the design build team to provide our lessons learned.  Our construction phase activities  included phases 2 through 5 testing, including witnessing of NETA testing and verification of coordination study settings.

  • Electrical Power – Standby Power System (UPS), Power Distribution Units (PDU), Cabinet Distribution Units (CDU), Remote Power Panels (RPP)
  • Chilled Water System – Rear Door HX – Hydronic
  • Air Handling System – Make-Up Air Unit, Air Handling Unit
  • Terminal Units – Fan Coil Unit – Hydronic, CRAH – Hydronic, Air Conditioning Unit – Packaged DX, Humidifier
  • Plumbing – Condensate Pumps

Project Snapshot

  •  Owner: Jet Propulsion Lab
  •  Project Size:  50,000 sq. ft.
  •  Construction Cost:  $60M
  •  GC: Clark Energy Group
  • Year of Completion:  2020

Challenges and Successes

  • Issue: During the design phase, we noticed an Emergency Power Off (EPO) switch was not included for the phase III equipment, including a bypass.
Resolution: As a result, the EPO was added with the bypass feature.
  • Issue: A result of the review of the mechanical systems, we had concerns about the relief air path not being apparent for the Data Rooms and possibly over pressurizing the space.

Resolution: We coordinated with the design team to verify the relief air path.
